Yvonne Mckenna Family Counselling
4840 Delta Street, Ladner, BC
Having raised two young men herself, Yvonne McKenna is well aware of the difficulties that come with raising children in this world. From the pressures of drugs, alcohol, and video games, to peer pressure, careers, and mental health issues – there are an endless amount of things that can take a toll on relationships within a family.
“No parent is perfect – and it is better if you are not! There are some great things parents can do to have a happier home and positive long-term relationships with their kids,” says McKenna.
Yvonne has lived and worked in Ladner for 12 years now and loves it more and more each day. A self-proclaimed “reluctant entrepreneur”, McKenna opened her family counselling clinic, Yvonne McKenna Family Counselling, in 2012.
“Creating my own business was not my first choice as a counsellor, but I took a leap, opened it, and was delighted to find such a supportive and thriving community that is South Delta.”
As a family counsellor and infant massage instructor, Yvonne sees many families who are struggling with mental health, relationship difficulties, and coping with life’s challenges. She collaborates with other agencies and programs in Delta to help support families, which provide a real ‘team effort’ that is unparalleled in other lower mainland communities.
“I also work at Reach Child & Youth Development Society as their counsellor and can’t imagine not working with that fabulous team!”
Yvonne is a highly qualified counsellor – not only does she have a Masters in Counselling, she also has over 25 years of experience working with families of all kinds and helping them overcome their challenges. Yvonne strives to have her clients walk away feeling like they have been heard, comforted, and challenged to grow.
So what can you expect when it comes to counselling with Yvonne?
During sessions in the new, larger playroom, clients can talk about any of the issues they are facing. Yvonne uses therapeutic play with children to help them express their feelings and coping skills. She also meets with couples, individuals, and groups to help with all of the things that life throws their way such as grief and loss, depression and anxiety, relationship difficulties, social exclusion, and dealing with separation and divorce.
Another area McKenna can help with is parent coaching. Challenges such as toilet teaching, getting children to sleep, discipline versus punishment, and positive self-esteem issues can make life difficult for parents. However, there are tried-and-true strategies that can help you navigate different ages and stages of your child's early years, and Yvonne is more than happy to help!
Yvonne McKenna Family Counselling’s goal is to contribute to the communities of South Delta through helping families find hope and move forward by looking at the skills and resilience they have gained in past difficult times.
